Unit Introduction

Established in October 2019, the National Institute of Southern Propagation of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Sanya is a career-oriented research unit organized by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It focuses on basic and cutting-edge scientific issues in the field of agriculture, combined with the strategic layout of Hainan's free trade port and the "Southern Propagation Silicon Valley", and focuses on innovative research on biological breeding application basics and breeding frontier technologies, cultivating high-end agricultural research talents and achieving self-sufficiency and self-improvement in the seed industry. We are also working with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences to effectively integrate the base resources of the 11 southern propagation research units and give full play to the advantages of the free trade port policy, so as to tackle major scientific issues and key technical problems in the seed industry and maintain the strategic security of China's seed industry. The project will give full play to the advantages of the "industry-university-research" cluster in the southern propagation base, build an open and shared platform, focus on the transformation of scientific research results in southern propagation, create a professional exhibition and trading platform, and an innovative cooperation platform to build a "breeding, propagation, pushing and service" integrated seed industry. "The main force of the seed industry is integrated.

 

Scientific Research Platform

In accordance with the "National South Propagation Silicon Valley Plan", a total of four major projects are planned and laid out for the construction of the National South Propagation Crop Phenotype Research Facility, Seed Industry Innovation Centre, National Wild Rice Germplasm Resource Park and Biosafety Large Science Facility, with a total investment of 2.8 billion RMB, a construction area of 150,000-200,000 square meters and 2,600 mu of supporting high standard farmland. The Southern Propagation Research Institute currently has research platforms such as the Crop Phenotype Research Centre of Yazhou Bay Seed Laboratory in Hainan Province and the Innovation Centre for Academician Teams in Hainan Province, which are already in use and operating in an orderly manner. On 24 January 2022, it was approved as a Key Laboratory for Innovative Use of Gene Editing (Hainan) by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, employing academician Zhu Health as the director of the laboratory, with annual matching support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Hainan Province. It is also accelerating the construction of four major national infrastructures.
